    notes

Due to a violent thunderstorm, the game began at 21:00. There were only 3,000 spectators. Di Bartolomei, who had spent the 1975/76 season at Lanerossi Vicenza, featured for Roma. Prati was unfit and watched from the stands, leaving Roma with only three players on the bench. Boca Juniors were coached by ex-Roma manager Lorenzo. The 1976 Independence Cup was awarded to Boca Juniors because of a strange ruling according to which the first leg, played in New York, was considered Boca’s “home” match, while the second leg, played in Montreal, was considered Roma’s “home“ match. Therefore the Cup went to the Argentinian outfit on the “away” goals rule. Different goalscorers were reported in the 27.06.1976 edition of Gazzetta dello Sport: the own goal in Boca Juniors’ favour was given to Cordova and the Argentinians’ winning goal to Sotelo.
